Baltimore has acquired the veteran outfielder they have searched for this offseason.

The Baltimore Orioles continued a week of offseason moves today when they shipped starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo to the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Seth Smith.

In Smith, the Orioles will get the piece that they have been looking for most of the offseason. The 34 year-old veteran is a left-handed bat and can play both corner outfield positions.

Smith has spent time throughout his 10-year career with the Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres and, most recently, with the Seattle Mariners. Smith hit 16 home runs and drove in a career-high 63 runs in 137 games for Seattle in 2016.

He is a career .261 hitter who can be counted on for his durability. Smith has appeared in at least 130 games in six of his last eight seasons.

Smith will likely make regular appearances in the corner outfield positions for Baltimore, depending on what the Orioles do the rest of this offseason. He could also see a good amount of time at designated hitter next season. Smith started a combined 27 games at DH in his two seasons with the Mariners.

Could this mark the end of Trumbo?

This move could signal an official end to the Mark Trumbo era in Baltimore. Last year’s league leader in home runs is still without a team for 2017, and there are currently no contract talks between he and the Orioles.

This also could very well end the Orioles search for a veteran free agent outfielder. The team was reportedly interested in Angel Pagan, Michael Saunders and Michael Bourn at points this offseason.

In Gallardo, the Orioles are giving up a starter who was a disappointment in 2016. His now lone season in Baltimore ended with career-high 5.42 ERA in 23 starts. Seattle will hope that the former all-star still has some life left in his arm as he ventures west. Gallardo pitched to a solid 3.46 ERA over the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers.
